I'm Back and Kitten Update

I can't believe that I've neglected the Zoo the past few days. I've been suffering from an ear infection. The typical swimmer's ear got me. I haven't had a case, since I was a kid. For some reason, reading or typing anything made me feel really queasy. So I avoided it, until I felt better. I'm rounding the corner with meds. I've been out of the pool for a week, and it's about to drive me bonkers. I guess it's for the best, since dizziness has gone with the infection.

Casey and I picked up the kittens at the vet's on Tuesday. They all did fantastically. Dr. K used the laser procedure on them, so recovery has been quick. The girls only have the tiniest incision, and no stitches to remove. They are back to their old, troublemaking selves. It hasn't slowed them down one bit. The girls are cute running around with their shaved bellies. They are VERY shaved, considering the surgery sites were VERY small.

Casey and I have LOTS to get done around the house this weekend. So much, that I'm taking a three day weekend. I've got to get all the usual weekend chores done, as well as plant flowers. I also need to continue the fight with project pitch. Sunday is Mother's Day, so I'll spend time making Mom feel special. The weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend, and I plan to enjoy every minute while doing chores. I have a workshop on Tuesday, so I'll be away. Everyone have a great weekend! Three Little Kttens: Growing Up

Our three kittens are well on their way to adulthood. Casey and I decided to take the upper hand, before the numbers doubled, and took them to be spay/neutered this morning. This is the first time that Dr. K has done this for us. The rest of the "Zoo" members went through this procedure years ago. We get to pick up Obi-Wan this afternoon. Isabella and Zoey get to come home tomorrow. Dr. K takes extra precautions and keeps the females overnight for observation. For the first time, we have the option of some pain medication after surgery. I know that giving them some pain meds for a couple of days will help them to heal faster. It's just so cool to have a vet that's up on the latest stuff. The vet we had before was wonderful, but he was an older, country vet. He'd be the first to admit that he didn't keep up on the new trends anymore. It's nice to have an active part in their medical care.

UPDATE: Dr. K's office just called. Everything went really well. They got to them late and would prefer us to leave all three overnight. They just want to make sure they wake up o.k. This is NO problem. It will give them an extra day that the other animals won't be bugging them.

Happenings In My Small Town

For some time now, the city of Shelbyvillle has been reworking the city dog ordinance. This action came after there was a local woman mauled by dogs and her dog killed. After this event, the city and the county decided that something, law or ordinance, be enacted concerning dangerous dogs. Many good things have come from the city and county talking to residents, animal organizations, and concerned pet owners. I'm glad that they are trying to be proactive, instead of reactive. The dangerous dog provision has been voted on and is becoming law. Unfortunately, there are some other issues that have come up during the restructuring of the city ordinance.--Click HERE to see the ordinance in its workings.-- The one change that concerns me most is part 3-116: Limitations On Keeping Domestic Animals. You guys know that I have several pets that I often refer to as "the zoo". It seems that the city wants to put a limit on how many pets I can own. We are NOT a big city. We are still rural in many ways. Heck, all we have in town is a Wal-Mart, a few grocery stores, and a few restaurants.

3-116 Limitations on Keeping Domestic Animals

(1) Domestic Animals are defined as dogs, cats, birds, snakes, small rodents, rabbits, chickens(including roosters), ducks and other fowl, which can be and are continually kept or raised in a home or on a lot. Animals not considered domestic animals include, but are not limited to,the following: horses, cows, donkeys, goats, sheep, and any endangered or exotic species of animals.

(2) Domestic animals as defined in permitted in all zone classifications within the City. Themaximum number of inside or outside animals is listed below.

(a) Inside Animals:

i. The number of birds, snakes, and small rodents, kept in aquariums, terrariums, cages, or other similar containers shall not be limited unless limited by health codes.

ii. All other domestic animals kept inside shall be limited to not more than five (5)total domestic animals. Except for the domestic animals list in subsection (a)(ii) above, the total number and type of inside animals allowed shall not exceed the number of animals that are allowed outdoors.

As you guys know, I have over the newly proposed limit. Before I have my say, I do want to go on record saying that this limitation may not be ALL bad. It will act as a deterrent to animal hoarders and people that breed dogs and cats improperly. It can be an instrument of good.

BUT for me, someone who obeys the animal laws: leash law, vaccinations, veterinary care, food, water, walks, and much love, this is a rather devastating blow. I spend my life trying to protect animals and save them. My pets are my babies. I don't have children, and they bring me much happiness and love. This limitation makes me feel like my right to happiness is being infringed upon. There have been several meetings with pet owners and the Shelbyville City Council on exactly this matter, and last Tuesday night, council members really got an earful. I agree with the point a lady made in attendance:

"...why she was being punished for the irresponsible action of others, saying that 'good people are being punished for the bad people.' "

Apparently, at this point, they are only putting the limitation on pets kept outide according the local paper. So you see, I'm confused from the get go. The written ordinance says inside and outside, so what am I supposed to think? It's frustrating not knowing how to prepare myself! My pets are NEVER outside, unless they are on a potty break or being walked by me or Casey. We are with them AT ALL TIMES with leashes. My dogs are inside dogs ONLY!! They are never kept outside AT ALL!!! So what I want to know is, how is this going to affect me? I've really been troubled over this for the past several months. I understand that my dogs can be "grandfathered" in, but this, according to the ordinance, requires many hoops to jump through. I can keep what I have now, but I can't adopt more if I lose any that I have now.

I believe one of the best ways to prevent questionable residents from owning many dogs is to charge them an overage fee. A certain fee for each dog owned over the limit. I would have no problem with paying that fee. My dogs and other pets mean that much to me. I do believe that it would dissaude others. Money is a strong motivator. It would definitely cull out those pet owners that were in ownership on impulse. Apparently, pet owners like me have come out in droves against the limitation. So, there should be a lot more meetings on the issue. I wasn't able to be there on Tuesday night this time, because of work. You can bet that I'll DEFINITELY be there next time! I'll keep you all posted on the developments. This has just made me heartsick.

New Pet Food Recall Info

A new pet food recall has been issued that I thought that I would pass along. Here is the info:

From the National Pet Foundation:

SmartPak Canine has recalled their product "LiveSmart Weight Management". They were using a rice protein concentrate from Wilbur-Ellis which already issued recalls on their products. SmartPak is claiming that all of their other products were not affected. The company has stated that they have contacted all of the customer that ordered this foods from online (which is their primary source of business) and informed them of the situation. Hopefully those individuals have been informed. However we just wanted to share this information directly with you since many pet owners had problems finding more information on their website. We talked to SmartPak today and they did provide us with a link to the recall information. They have to primary websites and the information was only posted on one of the sites.

2007 Spay Station Visit

Every year, the Wilson County Spay Station pays a visit to the Shelbyville-Bedford County Humane Association. This year's visit took place yesterday. I knew that it was coming up soon. Yesterday as Casey and I were driving home, we passed the Spay Station heading in the opposite direction. I figured yesterday was the day. This morning, I got an e-mail from one of our other members with details from yesterday's event. It was VERY successful! KUDO'S to the Wilson County Humane Association and their mobile Spay Station for being kind enough to help us out every year. Here's the account of yesterday's events from Debbie, another SBCHA member.

The Wilson County Humane Association brought their Spay/Neuter Station to Shelbyville Bedford County Humane Association to provide low cost spaying and neutering to the needy pet owners of Bedford County. They spayed and neutered 30 cats and dogs.

A Holiday to Behold OR The Clean Up

Dog owners unite! This is our week to celebrate National Scoop the Poop Week! An organization called aPAWS (The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists ) have designated April 23-30 to clean up after America's dogs. Pet ownership has reached a new high, so many pet owners that are busy with jobs, family, and other things are looking for ways to have the poop scooped for them. aPAWS is a non-profit organization that lists poop scooping services across the country on their website. Productive Weekend

Casey and I had a very productive weekend, but we also managed to squeeze a lot of fun in too. On Friday night, we visited with friends until after midnight. On Saturday night, we went out to the movies with the same group. We went to see Aqua Teen Colon Movie for Theatres. I haven't laughed that much at a movie in a long, long time. My face hurt, when I left the theatre. I have that skewed sense of humor, and I just loved the movie! We ended up going to the late show, so we didn't get home until nearly 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning, we had earned a free breakfast at Pope's Cafe, so we met up there around 10:00 a.m. to have a group breakfast. By Sunday afternoon, I was in need of a serious nap.

Despite all the going and late nights, Casey and I made a lot of headway on the Great Pitch Project. The middle room in nearly complete. All we are lacking is some trips up to the attic for storage. The spare room...well you can now at least see the whole floor in there. Casey worked like a mad man all day on Saturday and made lots of progress. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope it's not a train!

I'm back to the regular grind this week. I'm feeling much better, so I'll be back in the pool this week. I can't wait. I get antsy, when I'm out of the water too long! Everyone have a great afternoon!

A Little Maintenance

I've spent the better part of the morning categorizing and cleaning up my sidebar. I've gone through my blogroll and deleted links that haven't been updated in the last year or are no longer valid. If I usually link to you and have deleted your blog site, e-mail me or leave a comment. I'll be happy to add you back. I've tried really hard to group like categories together. It is still a little busy, so I'll be figuring out how to pare it down even more in the future.

It's an absolutely beautiful day, and I hope that everyone has a chance to go out and experience it. Casey and I are planning on going out to the movies and dinner with some really close friends tonight. We stayed over at their house visiting with them until midnight last night, so I'm paying for it today. 5:00 a.m. came early for this old girl today. I think I'm going to need a caffeine hit this afternoon. Everyone have a great weekend!!

Blue Buffalo Spa Select Dry Formula for Kittens (only the bags marked “Best Used By Mar. 07 08 B”)

Seems that the U.S. is NOT the only country affected by contaminated ingredients. South Africa has been affected as well. This time, it's corn gluten that's contaminated with melamine. Leigh Ann also passes along some very good advice on label reading. Click HERE to read on.

Pet Food Recall Expands....AGAIN!

The discovery of a second tainted ingredient has prompted the recall of another brand of pet food. This time, it is the rice protein that has been contaminated. The latest recall includes:

Natural Balance said it was recalling all its Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, its Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and its Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

I apologize for not being around the past several days. I have been battling a really nasty stomach bug. I've been wishing for death or to feel better, not caring which of the two actually happened. I'm feeling some better.... I'll be back tomorrow with better things to say.

Plight of the Recall

There are tales all over the internet about the losses suffered after the pet food recall. No one has an exact total of how many pets have died. What we do know is that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Before and during the recall's early days many pets were treated, only to come home and eat the tainted food again, resulting in their deaths. The whole twisted tale is sad. There is a beautiful write up posted at All Creatures by Jean Townsend - Johns Island, SC. There is one passage that a reader pointed out and wants to pass along to others. It is particularly poignant:

For some, the story ended there. But for others, there was one more horrifying chapter. Because kidney failure causes nausea, it's often hard to get recovering pets to eat. So a lot of these owners got down on their hands and knees and coaxed and begged and eventually hand-fed their pets the very same food that had made them sick. Those animals ended up right back in the hospital and died, because their loving owners didn't know that the food was tainted.

It sure makes me wonder about Pinky Lee. She was eating Science Diet canned food.

New Pet Food Contaminant and Stock Sell Off

Researchers believe they may have found another contaminant, in addition to melamine, in the recalled pet food. They are working at this time to identify what it is. It has also been found that some of the food may have contained excessive amounts of vitamin D, which can lead to renal failure. To see the whole story, click HERE. Looks like we've just hit the tip of the iceberg folks. I'm sure there will be much more information to come.

Also, the CFO of Menu Foods sold half of his shares of the company, just before the recall. THAT definitely looks a little shaky to me. What do you guys think? Click HERE for details.

Vet Check Results

Slate's checkup results are good. His bloodwork is all normal, and he's doing well on his new medication. He goes back for another check up in six months!! WOOT!! Thanks to everyone for the e-mails, comments, thoughts, prayers, and good wishes that were sent. You guys are the best!! Oh, and he got his special dish of Dairy Queen ice cream on the way home last night.

At the Vet's

Today Slate is at the vet's office for his one month follow up. Dr. K wanted to run a blood test, after he completed a month of his new heart medication. Sometimes, this med can cause renal problems, and he just wanted to make sure that everything was o.k. So early this morning, we got all loaded up and off we went. I dropped him off on my way to work. He was so excited about the car ride. I'll pick him up on my way home. On the way home tonight, we are going to swing by Dairy Queen and get him a little ice cream cup for a treat. I don't want him thinking every time he goes for a ride that something bad is going to happen to him. This was an easy visit for him, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the results are good. Slate's been doing really well, and I hope it continues. Still a little stressed, but I'm trying to occupy myself. I'll have the full update tomorrow.

A New Week

I hope that everyone had a good Easter weekend! It was pretty quiet around our place. Casey and I just "chilled" out (no pun intended) on Saturday. Casey was busy watching some DVD series, and I curled up with a VERY good book. It is called Glass Houses by Rachel Caine.

My friend, Kim, recommended this book, and I agree that it's a really good read. I finished it in a day, so I'm on book 2 of the series now called The Dead Girls Dance.

On Sunday, Casey and I went over to my Mom's for Easter dinner. Afterwards, we went to pick up some friends at the airport, who were coming home from California. So many friends, so much travel. It makes me have wanderlust BAD!! I'm just biding my time, until the summer.

In honor of our anniversary, Casey took yesterday off. We spent the day doing the most romantic thing......finishing the middle room pitch project!! All we have left now is to take the boxed up books to the library for donation. Afterwards, I did a little laundry and house cleaning, and Casey grilled us some steaks. Now, it may not sound romantic to you, but it made Casey the most attractive man around to me!!

Happy Anniversary!

This weekend, Casey and I celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary. We've been together over 16 years now, and it gets better all the time. We've been together, since we were 19. Casey is the BEST husband a girl could ask for. He's always supported and encouraged me to be the best and follow my dreams. He's made sure that I've always been able to take the opportunities that I've been offered. He also loves me, even when I'm not the best person I could be. Could I be any more lucky?

So happy 9th Anniversary Casey!! I love you!

I Hear the Music

I love live concerts, so I'm excited that the Nashville Symphony is returning to play a spring show in Shelbyville again this year. They've done this for the past several years, and it's always a fantastic night. As a former member of the Nashville Symphony Chorus I love it, when I have a chance to see them perform in my own backyard. My friend John Carney (who is a great supporter of my humane efforts) is on the committee responsible for bringing the Nashville Symphony's music to Shelbyville. The Birding

My day got off to a really strange start. I was brushing my teeth this morning, around 5:45 a.m. You know, just minding my own business, when something startled me overhead. I KNEW it was something. I just wasn't sure what. Anyway, I noticed within a few seconds that all of the cats were going C-R-A-Z-Y!! I also realized that I had noticed a flapping noise, when the little black streak was going overhead. I quickly looked out the bathroom door, after sounding like Princess Leia did after she spotted that mynock in The Empire Strikes Back, and noticed the attic door was slightly ajar. (The kittens have made it to the top of the kitty Nap and Play and are trying to wedge the attic door open).

The attic door is just above the kitty tower.

Anyway, I quickly deduced that either a bird or bat had come out of the attic. When Casey heard the scream, he came to see what was going on. He didn't believe my explanation of a bird, but I made him look all over the bathroom anyway. He asked, "Did something fall out of the linen closet?" I answered him, "Only if the laws of gravity have changed and things fall up now." After a complete search of the bathroom, nothing was found. Casey just walked away shaking his head like I was crazy. I just kept saying, "I KNOW there is a bird in this HOUSE!"

After a few minutes of feeling like a complete idiot, I heard Casey say, "The BIRD is in the living room!" I was relieved that it was indeed a bird and NOT a bat (birds are just easier to get outdoors, you know). Casey was busy making the mad dash to turn all of the ceiling fans off, before the poor creature committed suicide. Then, we just stood there looking at each other trying to figure out how to get this bird out of the house. By this time, the bird was flying back and forth from the kitchen to the living room. It finally decided to perch on the top of my pantry cabinet. ALL of the cats had gathered in the kitchen and immediately commenced bird charming. I ran to the bedroom to get an extra comforter to hang between the kitchen and living room archway. After I had that done, Casey opened up the backdoor in the kitchen and successfully shooed the bird out the door. We were VERY lucky that it worked the first time (no birds, cats, decorative items, or humans were hurt in the process). We knew we had to get it out, before we went to work. Between the bird and the cats, nothing would have been left of the house or the bird, I'm afraid.

Yes indeed. A strange morning.

Everyday, it seems that a different pet product is recalled. The latest includes Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® from Del Monte Pet Products. For full details go HERE .

The Weekend

If the weather holds out (we're supposed to get rain and storms later tonight), Casey and I may make our first trip to the Montana Drive In tonight. Going to the drive in is one of our favorite things to do, when the weather gets warm. I ALWAYS look forward to the first trip of the season. The Montana is open year round, but it's just more fun to go in warm weather. Casey and I want to see Blades of Glory. We just love Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. I'm looking to laugh. You just can't beat the deal at the Montana either. Two first run movies for $5.00, and the food from the concession stand is to die for. Check out their menu and cheap prices. The line at the concession stand is ALWAYS long, so we'll have to get there early. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the rain will stay away until late tonight. Everyone have a great weekend!

The Plot Thickens

When will we hear the end of this pet food recall? This whole thing just makes me scared to death that I'm going to be responsible for killing my pets. I've always tried to be careful, but with this it's out of my control. The latest news bulletins say they've found melamine (a plastic) in the recalled food. Now, they are testing dry dog and cat foods. This is scaring me now. I guess that I may switch the gang over to Pedigree. They've had their food tested by the FDA, and it has been deemed safe. I'm still weighing heavily whether to just make my own pet food or not. I just want to make sure they are getting what they need with no bad stuff. If I Didn't Have Animals.....

I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety.

My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.

All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair.

When the doorbell rings, it wouldn't sound like a kennel.

When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there.

I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable.

I would not have strange presents under my Christmas tree -- dog bones, stuffed animals ,toys, treats nor would I have to explain to people why I wrap them.

I would have money ....and no guilt to go on a real vacation.

I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn grand kids through college.

The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come,no, stay, and leave him/her/it ALONE.

My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers.

My house would not look like a day care center, toys everywhere.

My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash.

I would no longer have to Spell the words B-A-L-L-, F-R-I-S-B-E-E, W-A-L-K, T-R-E-A-T, BIKE OR CAR.

I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.

I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much.

I'd look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading "mud" season.

I would not have to answer the question "Why do you have so many animals?" from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get .

How empty my life would be.

Is It the Moon?

Sorry for the lack of posting yesterday. It was crazy around these parts. I had a wonderful post in mind for today. That all got scrapped, due to the frustration level today has achieved. It's just been one of those days. Heaps of frustration, one after another. Is the moon in a strange phase or something? If it is, I sure hope that it shifts soon. I'd hate to go crazy. I'll be back tomorrow. Hopefully, I won't be in a frustrated state of mind, and I'll be able to make an actual post.

Guilty Pleasure

A couple of months ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a really funny kids cartoon, Invader Zim.

It's been around for quite a while now, but I've somehow always missed it. I'm one of those people that really loves cartoons, so naturally, I love Zim. Even though it's for kids, it's so well written and funny, that adults can love it too. Zim is a member of the Irken empire determined to take over planet earth. My favorite character is GIR. GIR is Zim's robot that he disguises as a dog.

So everynight, at 9:30 CST, you'll find my t.v. tuned to NickToons watching Invader Zim. It's just one of my guilty pleasures. What are some of yours?

Weekend Wrap Up

Our weather was absolutely beautiful over the weekend. It was go, go, go at my house. Casey and I bought a new mattress and microwave over the weekend, so we did a lot of pitching out the old and bringing in the new. This would be the weekend that we had the hottest day in 100 years!! Our temp hit 86 degrees on Sunday. Needless to say, Casey and I were melted, runny spots, when we got finished getting everything situated. I fell into bed and onto the new mattress and was out like a light.

I spent most of yesterday doing some much needed spring cleaning. The next victim on the list is my chest of drawers. Time to clean out the old and make room for the new. Seems like there is a lot of that going on in my house lately.

I got to meet Stephenie Meyers at a booksigning last fall, and she's terrific! I've been looking forward to the new release for a while now. The new book is called Eclipse, and it's release date is August 7, 2007.

So Far, So Good

I'm happy to report that Slate has had no ill effects from the recalled dog food. Sunday, I fed him brown rice cooked in chicken broth. I also grabbed a can of Alpo and have fed him some of that. He was quite pitiful looking trying to eat his normal, dry food. I'm encouraged that he's trying though. I finally got a good look in his mouth and the back teeth behind the canines on top and bottom have been pulled. So, he's missing some major chewing teeth. His attitude remains sunny and his appetite is voracious, so I take that as a very good sign that we're getting back to normal. Maybe I can relax a little now. It has certainly made me consider switching all of my dogs to a raw diet or at least to make my own food.

This is a serious recall folks. Because of Slate's extracted teeth last Wednesday, we bought him some soft food to help him out. Wouldn't you know, every one we bought was on the recall list, so this is affecting the middle Tennessee area. Unfortunately, we've already fed him two pouches. I just got off of the phone with Dr. K. He said to just watch him. If he looks like he's getting sick, I'm to take him to the vet imediately. Just when I thought my worry was over. So far, he's showing no signs of any illness. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. If I could ask one more time, please send good vibes our way.

The Shredding and Other Things

We picked Slate up from the vet's office last Wednesday afternoon. They had done blood work, x-rays, an EKG, dental cleaning, and pulled four teeth. Quite a work over for the little guy. They had gotten a later start, so the little thing was quite woozy. Everything looked really good. The heart murmur is still there, but it still may go away when the mouth infection subsides. All of the blood work came back normal. WHEW! Everything is functioning well, and his lungs look good. The only thing they found was his heart is slightly enlarged. Dr. K. sent his EKG, blood work results, and x-rays to a cardiologist for consultation. He was sent home with another round of anitbiotics for his teeth, lasix for four days to keep any after surgery fluid from building up in his lungs, and a medication to make it easier on his heart. The vet was quite pleased and said that even though his heart is enlarged and has a murmur, it is very manageable. That was something I was quite glad to hear. I should hear some more details from the cardiologist sometime today. After the reports, we got Slate loaded up in the car and back home. He slept on and off for the rest of the night. His teeth weren't bothering him too bad, because I fed him some plain baked potato, and he woofed it right down *snicker*. After I gave him his meds, got him settled, and had dinner, I crashed for the night. The stress had exhausted me (or maybe it was just having seen the vet bill...good grief...more Ramen noodles).

I woke up yesterday morning with a blinding headache. I couldn't even make sense, so I called into work, took something, and went back to bed. It was a migraine that I think the stress caused. I didn't mind too much, because I knew I'd be home to check on Slate throughout the day. Casey was having some intestinal distress, so he stayed home too. When we both got up yesterday afternoon, we were feeling well enough to get some of the old paperwork out and go through it. We've just filed all of our old mail with sensitive information on it away for the past several years, and it was taking a life on of its own. We got the shredder out and shredded everything but one bag and the current stuff. Shredding all of that old stuff was quite liberating. Also, it was more junk to get out of the house. We'll now be able to use the writing desk (which was full to the brim) to store our current stuff. Just a little bit to go on the paperwork, and we'll have that completely out of the way.

I'm back at work and feeling pretty good today. I'm looking forward to the weekend. One of my student assistants is throwing a going away party that I'm attending tomorrow. He's leaving the states to go into the Peace Corps in the Ukraine. Tomorrow night, we're getting together with some friends to have dinner and watch a movie. I'm sure that Sunday we'll get more done with the house and more done on the "great shredding". I just hope that everything stays calm

Concentrating On Fun

I'm trying my best to keep my mind occupied with fun stuff today. I don't want to end up in a neurotic wad by the end of the day. So, I'm starting with one of my most favorite pastimes, besides animals: The 501st Legion.

The 501st Legion is a world wide fan club of folks who LOVE Star Wars and enjoy costuming. I'm one of those folks. Many people think that we are geeks, nerds, and dweebs. We can be those things, but it's other things that define us. Many people do not know that the members of the 501st spend many, many hours visiting children's hospitals, raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, collecting toys for Toys For Tots, visiting burn camps, entertaining at birthday parties, and many other functions. For most of us, the reason that we keep costuming and trooping is to make the kids smile. We participate in many other charities as well. There is a new documentary film that is about to be released documenting the 501st Legion and its members. This film shows the true heart of the legion. It uncovers members as not only nerds, but as good people who like to help out. It's called Heart of An Empire.

Greetings

After a few days of a lovely spring break, I'm back at the normal routine. We had some really nice weather, and Casey and I did quite a few things. Even though he was battling a nasty sinus infection, we took a trip to Nashville and went to the movies with a good friend. It was a nice, relaxing break that we both needed.

Today holds great potential for me to get "wound up". Tomorrow is Slate's vet appointment. He's supposed to have his teeth cleaned and an EKG to check on his heart murmur. The vet still thinks that fixing his teeth will probably fix the whole problem. I'm still just a little nervous about the whole thing. His coughing hasn't been bad at all. I still wonder if it's his usual springtime allergies or his heart. I'm suspecting it still may be allergies. He only coughs at night, and not during the day. Just like a person. I've made the arrangements at work to be a little late tomorrow morning. Then, I just have to wait the day out again. That's the part that I REALLY hate. It just gives me hours and hours to wind myself up and nerve out. I'm really glad that I'll be able to swim some laps today. Maybe that will help to calm me down. I can always hope so, right?

Come Eat For A Good Cause

The Diagnosis

Slate's diagnosis is in. The diarrhea is no big thing. Something probably just upset his tummy. I was very glad of that. It was a good thing that I did take him in to the vet. He has two abcessed teeth. This has happened since his last check up six months ago. Dr. K also found that he has a pretty pronounced heart murmur, which he also didn't have six months ago. Dr. K thinks that the heart murmur is a result of the infected teeth. He feels that some of the infection may be in the valves of his heart. He feels that it might clear up as we get the problem teeth fixed. So next Wednesday, we take Slate back in for teeth cleaning and abstraction, as well as an EKG. Dr. K said that the heart murmur could be pretty serious, but there was medication that we can use. So, not exactly a clean bill of health. I just hope that the murmur will clear up. Bear also has a slight heart murmur, but it gives him no trouble at all. Dr. K said to watch him over the next week, and if he starts to cough a lot to bring him right back in to see him. Everybody keep sending those good vibes.

It's spring break after today for me, so I won't be posting until next Tuesday. I hope that everyone has a fantastic weekend and that some of this great spring weather comes your way!!

Waiting

We took Slate, our chihuahua, in to see the vet today. His diarrhea cleared up on Monday, but as an overprotective "Dog Mom", I just want to know that everything is o.k. Bless his little heart. He was so cute. I took his harness and leash down this morning and asked him if he wanted to "go see Dr. K". He stuck his little head right through and rared up for me to pick him up and carry him to the car. He's been so good about riding in a car and going to the vet, since he was shot last May. I know that I left him in MORE than capable hands, but I'm still worrying today. Casey and I got Slate shortly after we were married. We've had him nearly 9 of his 10 years. For quite a while, he was an only dog. He has taken every new addition to the zoo in stride. He makes friends quickly and is very laid back. He likes all of the cats too. He has a special place in my heart, and I really worry about him. After last week and Pinky Lee, I'm leary that something else will be wrong. Please send good, calming vibes this way today.

Getting Cheer

In spite of everything that happened with Pinky Lee, I'm a bit more cheered up today. Her suffering is over. Yesterday, I went out for lunch and spent some time in the sunshine. After work, I did a little shopping. Most of it was for items that needed replacement, like jeans and tennis shoes. It did the trick though. I did get a really cool new Star Wars ship. That was my only frivilous spend. Tonight, unexpectedly, we have a group get together. A friend of ours has family coming into town and wants us all to meet up. This is some of the group that got together last weekend, so I KNOW that I'll have a great time. Hopefully, I'll be smiling A LOT more come Monday. Everyone have a great weekend.

Pinky Lee

I just wanted to give everyone an update on Pinky Lee. Pinky Lee's battle has ended. There is no more suffering for her. Dr. K, Casey, and I did everything we could for her, and I'm o.k. with that. Turns out that it was the genetic problems that we couldn't conquer. May she cross the Rainbow Bridge peacefully.

Doldrums

I've been really fighting off a bad case of maliase this past week. I feel tired, a little stressed, and like my bones weigh a thousand pounds. I can't name one big thing that's bugging me. It's a lot of little things. The day to day battle is continuing with Pinky Lee. She just might pull through, although I'll be eating Ramen noodles for a long, long time. The city is proposing a new ordinance, which will completlely cut my heart out of my chest and kill my soul. I lost a piece of jewelry that, although it doesn't have a lot of monetary value, the sentimental value is priceless. The very last straw was going home and finding a little of someone's blood after an intestinal episode on the carpet. After some investigation, we discovered that it was Slate's, the little chihuahua's. He seems to be doing just fine. His regular spunky self. So, we've just decided to watch him VERY closely for the next couple of days. Needless to say, I've been just a little cranky. I've noticed that I've kept VERY early bedtimes this week, so I think I may just be a little depressed over everything that's happened this week. I couldn't go to the pool yesterday. It was shut down because of the storms. Hopefully, today I'll be able to go over and get some of this out of my system.

I apologize for the whine, but I just had to get it out of my system. I'll be back tomorrow with better things to say.

Be Safe

The weather is already rocking n' rolling here. Some wicked stuff is headed our way. Just wanted to jump on for a few and tell everyone in the path of bad weather today to be safe. Still Hanging In There

Pinky Lee is still hanging in there. Dr. K did see some improvement after IV meds and fluids overnight. Yesterday, they force fed her as well. Casey is supposed to get an update sometime this morning. I just hope all of this works. I think that I'm going to have to go and sell a kidney or something, just to pay the bill. Unfortunately in the past year, we've been some of Dr. K's best customers. I sure do wish that we could claim pets as dependents on our health insurance. It would help a lot. I'll post more details as I get them.....

Sad Day

When we got Pinky Lee into the vet yesterday, the results were much worse than we expected. Apparently she had had this problem long before she ever came to live with us. What it boils down to is her pancreas and liver have shut down. They are so swollen that she can't pass any food into her stomach, thus the not eating and throwing up every time she did nibble. Her kidneys are also in pretty bad shape with blood her her urine. Her blood test results were horrible. We and Dr. K have decided to at least give her a shot. She is on medication and IV fluids at the vet's. If her numbers are improved this morning, she might have a shot. If not, it's time to end her suffering and let her go.

Fun Friday Night!

Yesterday was an absolute blast! After work, several of our friends met Casey and me. We all went up to Nashville for dinner at one of our favorite Japanese restaurants, Tanuki, and a movie. There was enough of us to split appetizers and sushi, so dinner was yummy and waaaay filling. After dinner, those of us girls along, went to see Hayden Christensen's new movie, Factory Girl.

We went purely for the Hayden eye candy factor, but as it turned out, it was a fairly good little flick. It was sad though. A lot of good 60's time period stuff. We had had a fantastic night. We called it a night fairly early, since I had to work today. I wish that we'd all had more time just to sit and visit. Hopefully, we can pull this off again soon. It was too much fun!

There's not much else big planned for the weekend. Casey and I continue the Big Pitch project. Monday, I have to take Mom for a doctor's visit, so not much else will get accomplished this weekend. Looks like the weather is a complete washout, but at least it's still warm.

Pinky Lee is continuing to improve slowly. Last night, she did nibble a tiny bit of food. She is still drinking her water too. Hopefully the vet won't require anything else, when Casey takes her in on Monday.

Pinky Lee Update

Well the sick kitty, Pinky Lee, is now on her meds. She is scheduled for a check at the vet's office on Monday. Our vet, Dr. K, is wonderful. He never makes us suffer by trying to give a cat a pill. He always gives cat meds in dropper form, so we are only mildly injured during the illness. So far, Casey and I only have just a few puncture injuries, instead of full blown shredding. That's always a plus in my book. We have gotten several dirty, "I wish you were dead" looks, but that's it. After her first dose last night, she at least was up and moving this morning. She is drinking lots of water still, but at least she won't be dehydrated. She had another dose of meds this morning. I hope that she is even better, when we get home tonight. Now if I can just get her to eat soemthing. Keep sending those good vibes!

Off to the Vet We Go

The past couple of days, I've noticed how our new cat, Pinky Lee, didn't look like she was feeling that well. I had also noticed how she had stopped eating ANYTHING. Casey and I tried wooing her appetite with everything: milk, canned food, shredded chicken, etc. Nothing worked. I've been watching her pretty closely, and I discovered that she was drinking LOTS of water. So last night, I actually caught her using the litterbox. After she exited, I went to investigate. I needed to get a clue somewhere. Well, it was as I had expected. Bloody urine, which indicates urinary tract infection in cats. These infections can be some serious stuff in cats, and in some cases even cause death. So, I knew I had to hop into motion. I called the vet and made an appointment. Because today is a short day at the vet's office, she can't go today. So, the vet is going to give her some antibiotics to take in the meantime to keep her from going downhill. Hopefully, we'll have her as right as rain soon. I've had these types of infections myself, and it's not fun. I know that she's not feeling well at all, so hopefully the meds will work quickly. I need her to get her appetite back and eat something soon! Everyone keep your fingers crossed..... Pennie, any suggestions of stuff I can do in the meantime???

5. When I was in school, I was obsessive about my grades. It was an A or nothing. Guess that's why I have a 4.0.

6. I'm a bit anal about being a perfectionist.

7. I'm a nerd, and I'm proud of it. I love Star Wars and mostly any kind of sci-fi.

8. Some of my bestest friends are nerds, and I love them for it.

9. I LOVE going to comic book, sci-fi, movie, t.v. conventions.

Valentine's Wrap Up

I'm just checking in for a quick minute to give the Valentine's Day wrap up. I am happy to report that I had a FABULOUS Valentine's Day. Casey suprised me by leaving several goodies at my work desk, while I was on break yesterday. I got beautiful yellow roses, a really sweet card, and (even though we said we wouldn't) the biggest Toblerone bar I've ever seen. The card was the best. After work, we went and played a great game of raquetball. Then Casey cooked us up some scrupmtious steak. I couldn't have asked for a better day!

Frosty Hearts

Well, the weather has done the old switcheroo on us again. It was 60 degrees yesterday. Today it's 19 degrees and snowing. That's right. We've got snow on our Valentine hearts here (apparently there's much of the country in the same situation.

I'm not sure what all is in store for today. Casey and I decided to stick to our guns and NOT go out to eat for Valentines Day. We're trying to stop marking special occassions with big dinners and food. Instead, we've decided to keep our weekly date for our raquetball game. We're going to try to do something good for ourselves. Casey is going to fix us some small steaks tonight, when we get home. I've already given Casey his Valentines. He was pleased, so that makes me happy. I'll be sure to make a report tomorrow.

A ten pound dog can come away with vomiting/diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures and an abnormally elevated heart rate from just two ounces of baking chocolate or 20 ounces of milk chocolate. Cats are sensitive, too, but they don't normally eat large enough amounts of chocolate to cause anything worse than gastrointestinal upset. Chocolates also contain fat and caffeine-like substances known as methylxanthines, which can potentially cause the above symptoms and, in severe cases, death.

Put Alcoholic Beverages Safely Away

Many a curious pet has explored an alcoholic beverage left in a glass. If ingested, this could cause vomiting, diarrhea, a lack of coordination, central nervous system depression, tremors, difficulty breathing, metabolic disturbances and coma. Alcohol can even cause death from respiratory failure if a large enough amount is ingested. It is important to keep in mind that animals are not only smaller than us, they often metabolize substances differently. This makes pets more susceptible to alcohol in smaller amounts. We advise not allowing pets to have any access to alcoholic beverages or other alcohol-based products.

Don’t Let Your Animals Ingest Sugar Substitute

Another potential hazard is gum or candy sweetened with the sugar substitute xylitol, which can cause a fairly sudden drop in blood sugar (known as hypoglycemia). This can result in depression, loss of coordination and seizures. “If you suspect your dog may have eaten products containing any of these harmful ingredients, please seek veterinary treatment immediately,” says Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and Vice President of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

Keep Holiday Flowers Out of Reach

Many varieties of lilies are highly toxic to cats, so if these are your Valentine’s flower of choice, make sure your cats can’t get near them.

Other potentially poisonous flowers may include:

- tulips (especially if potted, as the bulbs are the most toxic)

- amaryllis (same as tulips)

- Calla lily (can cause intense oral and gastrointestinal irritation)

- daisies

- chrysanthemums

- baby's breath

Safer alternatives might include:

- African violet

- asters

- camellia

- Canna lilies (they are not of the genus Lilium)

- jasmine

- orchids

Keep Your Pets Away from Thorns

Pet owners are urged to take caution with roses and other flowers containing thorns, which could be potentially harmful to pets if played with, bitten, stepped on or swallowed. “It’s all too easy for pets to step on thorny stems that fall to the ground as a flower arrangement is being created,” says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine for the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. “Be sure to keep your pets clear of your workspace as you arrange your beautiful flowers, since they can develop serious infections from thorn punctures.”

Don’t Leave Candles Burning

Candlelit dinners are romantic, just don’t leave the room while the flames are still burning. Let curious paws and beaks find other, safer things to play with.

Clean Up After Wrapping and Decorating

Make sure to keep balloons, cellophane, tape, ribbons, bows and other wrapping items or festive decorations out of your pets’ reach. Choking on any of these items, or ingesting them, may prove hazardous to your pet’s health.

The Right Way to Give Pets as Presents

It may seem very tempting to give your loved one a new puppy or kitten for Valentine’s Day. They sure are cute and cuddly! But the ASPCA wants to remind you that bringing a new companion animal into your home is a big decision. Why not present your loved one with a gift certificate to adopt from your local shelter, or take a trip to the shelter together? You might just make another love match.

I'd just like to wish a Happy Valentine's Day to the most wonderful husband in the world! We've been each other's valentines, since we were teenagers (going on 17 years now!) I couldn't ask for a better man than Casey. He lets me be me, and he still loves me for it. How lucky am I?

Lazy Saturday

There's not a whole lot going on today. It's been pretty quiet. Later this afternoon, I'm going to try to get some laps in at the pool. When I get home, Casey and I are supposed to head over to a friends' house to watch some movies and DVDs. Tomorrow, Casey and I are going to work on the "Big Pitch" project. Neither of us got a whole lot done last week. We were busy catching up on errands that needed to get done. Afterwards, we were exhausted. This weekend, here's to pitching out everything that hasn't been used in the last year and that's not nailed to the floor!

Picture Time

It has been a while, since I posted pictures of the "Zoo Crew". The kittens, Isabella, Zoey, and Obi-Wan have all gotten SO big. Casey and I bought them a new play toy, a Kitty Nap and Play. It's like a cat tree, and is five stories high. The nice thing is that it's heavy latex covered netting, and it can be wall mounted or hung on the back of a door. Here it is:

It has toys hanging on most of the levels, and the kittens love it. They play in it non-stop.

Meeting Timothy Zahn

As promised yesterday. I finally have it. The picture of me and Casey meeting Timothy Zahn. He was doing a book signing for his new Star Wars book, Allegience.

Worn to a Frazzle

The Timothy Zahn signing at Davis-Kidd went super last night. Our time to start changing into our gear was 5 p.m. The program began at 6:00 p.m. We had a great array of characters from Darth Vader and Stormtroopers to Mara Jade and Anakin Skywalker. After all of the attendees got their books signed and left, we got to spend a little time with Mr. Zahn and get our pictures made and autographs as well. He is such a very nice man. He was always willing to answer any questions, and he was happy to engage us in conversations. We forgot our camera, but we have some great pictures coming from friends to share. Hopefully, I'll have our picture with Mr. Zahn to share tomorrow. In the meantime, you can see just a few of the pictures HERE. We wrapped up a little after 9:00 p.m. Afterwards, everyone headed over to the Ruby Tuesday across the parking lot for dinner and visiting. Mr. Zahn went to dinner as well. Casey and I would have loved to stay for dinner, but it was getting late and we had over an hour's drive home. Our little sweet doggies were there patiently waiting to be let out (Mom had let them out earlier for us in the day). Even though we didn't get home too late, I'm dog tired today. I've just really been dragging for some reason. I don't think that I've ever really recovered from Monday.

Weekend In A Blur

This past weekend just flew by. Unfortunately, I didn't get to work on the weekend pitch project AT ALL!! Too much just came up and filled my plate. On Saturday afternoon, Casey and I watched a couple of movies that we needed to get back to the rental place. Later that evening, we went over to a friend's house just to hang out and visit. It was after midnight, when we got home. Casey had shelter duty on Sunday morning. I slept in, unfortunately, and got a late start. A friend of ours came over for a visit on Sunday afternoon. Afterwards, it was time to quickly get ready and head out to a Super Bowl party. Casey and I weren't really THAT into the game, but we did enjoy our visit quite a bit. Yesterday was the NEVERENDING errand day. For some reason, I just ended up with EVERYTHING to do yesterday. Before 9:30 a.m. I had: showered and dressed, cleaned the car out, took 3 of the dogs to the groomer's, renewed Casey's car tags, paid the electric bill (hi! to my new friend, who is a "Zoo" reader, that I met while doing that chore), took a load of trash to the dump, went to Wal-Mart and got my shopping done, and had breakfast. I then went back home and got a couple loads of laundry done. Then I took my Mom out to lunch and dropped off my beautiful pet painting at the framer's. I came home and got my 501st costume starched and ironed and packed up. The afternoon's job was getting the brakes on the car fixed. When that was finished, Casey was home and off we went to pick the dogs up from the groomer's! They all looked so cute with their Valentine's bandanna's. I'm tired just remembering it all. WHEW!! It was SO cold. By last night, I really had chilled to the bone. Luckily, today has been a tad warmer.

Tonight Casey and I are trooping at a Star Wars author book signing at Davis-Kidd Booksellers. The author is Timothy Zahn and his new book is called Allegience. We are there with the Southern Outpost to pose for pictures with the fans and make the atmosphere all Star War-zy. Casey and I are planning to get a book signed for ourselves too! It's going to be a late night tonight. I hope to have some good pictures to share with everyone tomorrow.

A Fond Memory

Did you ever hear a song that just made a memory in your brain pop. From the days when I was a very small child, I have just loved Arlo Guthrie (yeah I know, my tastes are bit ecclectic from Star Wars to Arlo Guthrie). I hold Arlo in almost as high esteem as I do Justin Hayward (lead singer of my favorite, the Moody Blues). For some reason, I never thought to search Arlo on YouTube before today. I was pleasantly suprised to find a performance video of one of my very favorite Arlo songs, City of New Orleans. That song brings back such good memories for me from my childhood. Of course, I love Alice's Restaurant too!! But for now, I'll just enjoy this:

The Weekend, the Big Pitch, and Other Things

We woke up to more ice and snow yesterday. The amounts yesterday were a bit more, so all of the local school kids got another day off. There was a bit more snow on the ground yesterday and it had LOTS more moisture. It made the most beautiful picture. It stuck in the trees and on the bushes. I was irratated that the camera battery was dead. WAAAH!!! No pictures!! I guess the event will just have to live on in my memory.

I can't wait for my days off this week. Casey and I are continuing our "Big Pitch 2007". We bought all new dog beds last night to replace the ones that we've had and worn out. Last week, I culled all of the unused stuff out of the bedroom and reorganized. This week the next room down the hall, the bathroom, is on the list. I get to pitch and reorganize the linen closet. I've decided to take one room or project a week. Hopefully by mid March, I will have simplified every room in the house. Casey's working on the spare room. I can't wait to see the end results. We haven't culled our stuff, since our last move nearly nine years ago. I'd say it's about time. It's amazing the amount of junk that you can collect in that length of time. So off I go.....

A Snow Day Without Any Snow!!!

Well, the cold wintry weather wandered through the area last night. When I got up to roam around the house at 1:30 a.m. this morning, I was rewarded with snow falling silently in the yard. It was my favorite kind of snow too. We had an inch or so on the lawn, but nothing on the road. As a precaution, many of the area school systems shut down for the day. Yes I know that we southerners are wimps about snow, but you have to realize that the south has lots of steep hills. We also DO NOT have the equipment to deal with snow and ice on the roadways, since we so infrequently get winter weather. I can practically count on one hand and NOT use all of my fingers the number of times that we've had snow on the lawn in the past five years. Most of the time, it's just like it was today. I AM very glad that the ice never appeared. Like I said yesterday, ice makes the power go out and people crazy here. We still have a few more snow chances before the weekend. I'm sure that our luck will run out soon, and we'll get hit broadside with God's snowball. But for me, I'm not complaining today. I like to look at it but not drive in it.

The snow took several of the dogs by suprise this morning on the way out the door. Shiloh paid it no mind, as anything that gets in her way is quite literally plowed down. That includes people, other animals, and trash cans. Let's just say that she's usually a little over zealous about getting out do "do her business". Bear loves to play snow plow with his nose! Casey said that he made his usual rounds in the yard and looked up at him with about an inch of snow piled up on his nose. Trixie, the spare dog, absolutely decided that nothing was out of the ordinary. Slate romped around and played. The cold weather always makes him frisky. Fergie was VERY leary of the white stuff that was piled up at the bottom of the back porch. Nosiree, she didn't want ONE thing to do with it. We had to do a heap of convincing to get her to stay out at all. The cats were ALL insulted the snow had barged into their kingdom. I love to watch all the animals' reactions, when something out of the ordinary occurrs. The snow this morning certainly made the start of my day interesting!
