Spill the Wine

Luckily, I'm feeling much better today. After reading up on my eye diagnosis, I feel very lucky that it got caught early. Seems that I could have had quite a bit of permanent damage. Anyway, I feel more like myself today than I have since Saturday. Work will pretty much be the usual today. A very good friend of mine, Amanda is dropping by work to have lunch with me today. We used to work together, then she went to work for Disney, and then she moved to Virginia. I haven't seen her in about 2 years, so it will be nice to catch up with her. Now if I can decide where to take her. Everything sounds good. I must be hungry this morning!

I've spent this morning getting an advertisement slide for the humane association's fall wine tasting, "A Taste Around the Holidays" ready. Our local cable access channel will run the slide for us at no charge. This year, I have it ready early, so we can get more air time. It's a really nice event to attend. There is a silent auction that you can participate in, besides getting to try all of that good wine. I think that we usually have 6 or 7 wine vendors there, along with a lot of food vendors as well. I've been out of town the past couple of years, when the event has been scheduled. I'm looking forward to attending this year. I've posted my morning's work below. Let me know what you think...Tah for now!

Hello There!

Sorry for not posting yesterday. I'm a bit under the weather with a really nasty eye infection. So, keeping my eyes shut has been a must over the weekend and the past couple of days. I'm still not feeling really well, so I'm just going to post a funny that one of my good friends sent me in e-mail. I hope that you enjoy. I'll try to get the dog show pictures posted tomorrow or Friday. I don't really feel like trying to get everything downloaded today. Hopefully by the end of the week, I'll be on the mend. I do hope that you all are having a great week.

Don't forget that there is still much disaster relief work going on in Florida.

Dog Show Review

The dog show was absolutely fabulous! There were a lot of good vendors there too. I did well and held my self control in check. I did manage to get quite a few pictures, but my camera battery died before I left. I'll just have to wait until next week to get all of the pictures and full review posted. DRAT! I hate when that happens. I was pleased to see some schipperke classes listed on the program. Those classes had already taken place this morning, but there is one more tomorrow. Maybe I can make that one. I got to talk to a lot of "dog people" and also I got to pet a lot of the show dogs today. Too cool! Keep checking back for the full review.

The Justin Hayward chat was a blast too. There were tons of people there, so you had to be a speed reader to keep up with the scroll. I was delighted that he actually answered my question!!! I really felt like I got to participate. Hopefully, he won't wait too long to host another. I'll post the picture of me meeting him several years ago on the photoblog next week too.

All in all, it has been a fabulous Saturday. Hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!

Every Time I Get Myself Together, I Forget Where I Put It!

Wow!! I can tell already that this is going to be a very busy day for me. Thank goodness I get 2 breaks and a long lunch hour today. I work a long shift on Saturday. I've got to get my work stuff cleared away, and then the rest of the list can be ticked off. Let's see, I've got to run to the bank sometime this morning before it closes. Then I'm going to pop by a chat by my favorite singer, Justin Hayward. He's the lead singer of the my favorite band, The Moody Blues. I've been a big fan ever since I was a little girl. It will be interesting to see what the news and info will be. After that is over with, I'm going to go across campus to The Great Murfreesboro Kennel Club dog show. It's a special anniversary show, so it should be a pretty big. I did haul the digital camera with me today along with the cords, so I should be able to post pics on my photoblog this afternoon. I can't wait to hit the vendor booths either. They always have such good stuff at dog shows. I've got to try to get a schedule online as well. I'd love to know if they have any Schipperke entries. I also would like to know the times of the Chihuahua and Jack Russell classes as well. So, I'd better be off to begin on my list. I'll post more after the dog show this afternoon. TAH!

News of Interest: Dogs and Cats

As I was perusing the news wires this morning, I came across these 2 stories. They were interesting and I thought I'd share them with you. The first, results of a study finds that dogs can smell and detect cancer in humans. To read the full story, click here

The second is about a lost cat that returned home after missing for 18 years!! I think that's incredible!! Anyway, to read the story click here.

Seems it's a good day for pets!

It's Finally Friday

Even though I was out for a day this week, it has been the longest week ever! I am looking forward to The Greater Murfreesboro Kennel Club dog show this weekend. It is being held at the livestock center across campus. I get a long lunch tomorrow, so I plan to take my sandwich over with me and watch the show. I know it will be a great event. Mom and I are planning to come back over on Sunday afternoon, so we can take it all in. Other than that and watching the Titans game, there isn't much on the agenda for the weekend. Just my usual plans of cleaning at home and getting everything caught up. I might, however, take Bear over to the neighborhood park on Saturday evening. I think he'd enjoy the walk over. It's only about 2 blocks from my house, and it would break his normal walk up a bit. We'll see. Everyone have a great weekend!

Below is another pet parent item that you can get for free from the ASPCA. It is a free pet emergency sticker that you can post on your door. From the ASPCA:

"This easy-to-use sticker will let people know that pets are inside your home, in case you cannot. The card must be visible to rescue workers. It must contain 1) the types and number of pets in your household; 2) the name of your veterinarian; and 3) your veterinarian's phone number."

And the Beat Goes On

Sorry about not getting a post on the blog yesterday. I was feeling a bit under the weather. I'm feeling much better today, so here I am, back at it. I haven't gotten much accomplished, except laundry, the past couple of days. Hopefully tonight, things will start shifting into gear. Not much big on the agenda workwise today. I'm just catching up from being out yesterday. Lots of e-mail to catch up on. I hope that today will go smoothly.

Just a reminder that this week is National Dog Week. Everyone get out there and enjoy your dogs.

Get a free ASPCA pet poison control sticker for your home. Per the ASPCA website:

"Here's your opportunity to receive a FREE ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center magnet for your home or office. The magnet displays our toll-free emergency number and website address; a great way to keep our information handy in case of an emergency."

Same Ol' Same Ol'

Well, here I am on the beginning of yet another week. The weekend went by in a fairly uneventful manner. The weather was just so gorgeous here, that I did manage to get in a couple of very long walks with Bear. I felt so uninspired over the weekend. I didn't get anything of note accomplished, but I guess we all need one of those every now and again. I was a bit disappointed when the Titans lost their game too. Anyhoo, I got up yesterday and got my Mom to her Dr.'s appointment in Nashville. Everything went exceptionally well, and we are all breathing a bit easier too! She just has to go back for a recheck in a month. The appointment didn't take all that long either. Neither Mom nor I minded the drive since the weather was being cooperative. We even stopped on the way back for a snack. We decided to take the long way home through Ellington Agricultural Center. They have the most beautiful garden there. It really made our trip home quite pleasant.

Not much planned for today. Casey has the day and the car to go and turn his much worked on application and resume in. He'll pick me up this afternoon and afterwards who knows what we'll get into. Tah for now!

Monday Deadline for MUTT Contest

Just a reminder to all of my readers. In case you're considering entering The Great American Mutt Contest, the deadline is Monday, September 20, 2004 5:00 p.m. EST. I've entered my own Shiloh in the contest. For details and registration, click the icon below:

It's the Weekend!

Finally, I've made it to the end of my workweek. I'm only feeling a little worse for wear today, since I've battled with a bout of insomnia this week. I finally did sleep last night, and today I feel worse for it. I guess I just need one more full night's sleep to start feeling like myself again. Casey and I went out for a fabulous Chinese dinner last night. We went to this little local place called Chef Chen's, and I swear they have the best food ever! The best part of dinner was their wonton soup and their steamed dumplings; the best I ever ate. After we were feeling fat and happy, we went back home to finish up the 3rd season of Sex In the City on DVD. We only lacked 2 episodes, so we decided that Casey would have enough time to watch, before his shift started at work. Afterwards I actually felt sleepy, and decided to retire to bed for a much needed night of sleep. I'm going to spend most of today updating Casey's resume. Seems he may have a new lead on a position he's interested in taking. Here's the catch. He told me he'd requested a copy of his old resume, but instead what came is a copy of the old job application. Kinda helpful, but not exactly what I needed. He said he'd updated it with his current job duties and references. He gave me the duties, but didn't include new references and new phone numbers! ACCCKKKK!!! So now, I only get to partially complete it and it has to wait until Tuesday to be sent. Oh well, I can only do what I can do.

My plans for the weekend have shifted a bit. I got the weekends mixed up for the dog show. The show takes place NEXT weekend, instead of today and tomorrow. That leaves me free to have a leisurely lunch with Melissa, and all day Sunday to myself. After the Titans game tomorrow, I can get started on that back room. That probably will be a project that lasts several weeks. Then Monday is the big Dr. visit for my Mom. A trip that I'm not looking forward to at all. Everyone keep their fingers crossed for me.

Tomorrow starts the celebration of National Dog Week. It lasts until the 25th. I found out about this through one of my pet newsletters. So, everyone go out and enjoy their dogs this coming week! Have a great weekend everyone. The photoblog is updated as well. Have a look!

The Howling Wind

By the time I left work yesterday, the weather had turned quite nasty thanks to Ivan. The rain was pouring in buckets, and the wind gusts had picked up to about 35 mph. That made for an interesting trip home. I had to go a lot slower, because my tires are a bit on the worn side, and my car has the tendency to want to hydroplane. Of course, knowing my luck, I had to stop by the grocery and the gas station. By the time I finally got home, I was soaked clean through. What good is an umbrella in 35 mph winds? Nada...I found that out. Anyway, I finally made it home, and Casey cooked a great quick dinner for us. I managed to catch the 2nd episode of Joey last night, and it was better than last week's. I sure hope that it does well this season. After that is when the fun started. Casey and I discovered several months ago that we had a small leak in our kitchen. Nothing major, and it was only bothersome if it was raining really, really hard or the wind was up. Well, last night certainly fit that bill. Our small leak became a HUGE one in short order. We started out catching the water with a typical mop bucket. To our horror, we soon discovered that we were emptying it about every 25 min. We switched to a 5 gallon bucket. Overnight, I ended up emptying that 5 gallon bucket 4 times. That's how much rain we had. Nearly 20 gallons of water poured through my kitchen ceiling last night. We put the 5 gallon bucket out at 7:30 p.m. I emptied it around 9:00 p.m. Then I emptied it again right before bed at 11:30 p.m. (Yes, I did finally sleep and like the dead too!). I got up again at 1:30 a.m. and emptied a nearly overflowing bucket. Finally this morning, I emptied it once again at 5:30 a.m. At least I got my workout throughout the night!! SHEESH! And the wind....the wind was horrible. It got higher and higher throughout the night. I know it's NOTHING compared to what the folks in Alabama and Florida endured, but it was pretty bad weather for our area. You could hear debris flying through the air and hitting the sides of the house. Rain was blowing down, past the flue into my chimney because of the wind. Over at my Mom's, it ripped her wooden arbor in half and tossed it across the yard. Garbage cans were everywhere this morning, and a lot of Murfreesboro was without power. That's all I'd like of that for a long time. Fortunately, everyone is safe and all is well this morning. It could have been a lot worse, and thankfully there were no tornadoes or storms accompaning the wind and rain. I just have a lot of yard cleanup to do over the weekend.

Not much else going on today. I'm just glad that it's Friday. I'm looking forward to my weekend plans. Mom and I are planning on attending the dog show on Sunday. Monday will be pretty much dedicated to taking her back to Nashville to see her specialist. I'm nervous for her, and neither of us know quite what to expect. I'll just hope for the best. I'll be updating the photoblog shortly, so everyone feel free to have a look. Everyone have a great day! TAH!

Attention Cat Lovers!

While reading around on some other blogs today, I stumbled across this website.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This is a quick blurb from the website describing the project.

"It all began innocently enough when a user on an Apple help forum posted a picture of his cat, Frankie, contemplating the beauty of a flower. Shortly afterwards another user posted a picture of his cat bristling at the image of Frankie on the monitor. I decided this was too much fun and advanced the concept as The Infinite Cat Project which is, simply, cats regarding cats regarding cats in an electronic melieu."

Everyone can join in the project by submitting their own pictures. Log onto the website to see the pictures that have been posted so far. Too hysterical!! Click the icon above to begin. Enjoy everyone!

Knockout Drops....Anyone????

I figured by the time that I got back home yesterday I'd be dead on my feet. For some strange reason, I was still antsy. I ended up cleaning up the kitchen, cleaning all the cats' litter boxes, doing some laundry, and talking to one of my friends on the phone until 11 p.m. Criminey!! I can't figure out where all of this energy is coming from. For months, I've been plagued by that sudden feeling of exhaustion. It always comes on when I'm right in the middle of something. I guess it's gone for now. Once again, I ended up getting in bed really late last night. I was only able to go then, because I took a benedryl to help with all of the fall allergies. Surely tonight I'll drop like a stone. I figure when I do crash, I'll crash in a mighty big way.

Not a whole lot going on on the home front. I took Bear for a really long walk last night. I'm fairly sure that will be his last walk until Sunday, because of the weather complications we're having. Hurricane Ivan has decided to head up into Tennessee and cause flooding problems. We're supposed to have between 4-6 inches of rain in the next 24 hours with 40mph sustained winds. Not weather for dog walking. Anyway, I tried to wear him out last night. It will be interesting to try and keep him entertained for the next 3 days indoors. I'm sure I'll sleep good after that. Of course, he doesn't mind the rain. He'll walk in any kind of weather.

The weekend is already shaping up for me. My friend Melissa and I are going to meet for lunch on Saturday. There is also an all breed dog show on campus this weekend. I'm either going to drop by there on Saturday, or my Mom and I are going to come back and spend the day on Sunday watching. It should be a pretty interesting event. Who knows what else I'll get up to doing. I'm planning on beginning the cleaning project for the spare room. So, I'll probably spend all day Monday working on that. Gotta keep some spare time to keep my options open though.

I've added an icon (THANKS ANDREA!!) in my sidebar for my photoblog. It will keep you all updated to when I've added new photos. Keep an eye out for new postings!! TAH!

And the Week Goes On...

Well, we made it in to the Dr.'s yesterday. They ran a test on Mom to send off and decided that she needed to see a specialist this coming Monday. Seems my week will be crazy next week too. I'm a bit worried about it, but the doc assures us that this is pretty much routine and there is nothing to worry about. I'm still worried anyway. Afterwards, we stopped at Applebee's, where Mom treated me to lunch. It was really yummy. We swang by Aquatic Critter to pick up some much needed crickets, and then we were on our way back home. Since we live about 60 miles, one way, from Mom's internist that accounted for a full day. We'll see how next week goes.

I had a horrible bout of insomnia last night. Come 1 a.m., I was still on the couch awake and watching t.v. When I did finally get to sleep, it was very fitful. Needless to say, I feel like I've been hit by a truck this morning. Also every since late last night, I've been having a HUGE case of the blues. I have no idea what the reason is either. I have no valid reason to really pin it on. Maybe I'm just tired. I'm hoping that I'll start to feel better as the day wears on, and I get back into my normal routine. Gonna run for now.... Check out the photoblog here, for updates.

Monday Update

Just popping in tonight, since I won't be around tomorrow. My mother is having a bout with illness, so I'm taking tomorrow off from work to take her to the doctor. We have a midday appointment. Hopefully, we'll be able to get to the bottom of the problem this time. On a different note, I spent the better part of the weekend coordinating some folks off of my groomer and dog lists to help the past and future hurricane victims in Florida. A couple of the list members have land or places that the people evacuating, due to hurricane Ivan, can go with their animals for shelter. Where I came in was contacting the humane agencies like American Humane Association, Humane Society of the United States, and Pets and Animals in Distress with their contact information to pass along to their disaster teams located in Florida. I feel a little better in the fact that I've at least tried to do something. I wish everyone the best that is in the path of the most recent storm.

Other than that, I've spent the rest of the weekend just lying around lounging mostly. I took some allergy meds on Saturday night that rendered me pretty much useless all day yesterday. Today, I just ran around town and did some necessary errands. I did run into several good friends that I haven't seen in some time, so my errands took even longer than usual. We just hung around the store visiting mostly, but it was really good to catch up with everyone. I also have started the big bathroom cleanup. I should be finished within the hour. One of the problems I have is my bathroom is small with very little ventilation. I have to be careful how many cleaners I get going in there, or else I'll find myself passed out on the floor. I ended up that way quite a lot, when we first moved due to this ignorance. Oh well. Gonna run for now. I hope that everyone has a good Tuesday. I'll have something interesting posted, hopefully, as soon as I get back on Wednesday. TAH!

Visit the Zoo's Companion Photoblog

I've started a photoblog to accompany my main blog here. This way, everyone can get a bigger look at Richardson Zoo. I've just posted a whole bunch of summer vacation pictures. The photoblog's name is Richardson Zoo: The View. Click the link to go and have a look.

A View of the Zoo

For all of you wondering, Casey and I have a virtual menagerie of animals living at our house. I've always made the joke that if it floods and our house floats, we'd have our very own ark. The description of this blog is no exaggeration. We really do have 28 furred and scaled pets, and that's not even counting all of the fish we have in aquariums. We have dogs, cats, lizards, and fish. Some people see this as crazy, but Casey and I really do see it as a type of therapy. We really are the happiest when we are taking care of our animals. Every night, feeding time can take upwards to 2 hours or more, but that's fine by us. I've posted some pictures of just a few of our crew. I'm planning on, later today, creating a photoblog to accompany this blog. It will be called
Richardson Zoo: The View
I'll let you all know as soon as it's ready. Meanwhile....enjoy the view. Everyone have a GREAT weekend!!

Musings....

Well, it's finally Friday. I can't say that I've really had an overly exciting week. It's been pretty much the usual. Go to work, go home, go to work..... I'm feeling a little bit tired this morning, but that's usual for the end of the week. I did watch the premeire of Joey last night on NBC. I had waited for it, because I am a Friends finatic and have been for years. I had walked Bear early, because it was such a beautiful and cool afternoon. That way, I could really sit, watch, and relax for the rest of the evening. Casey had made an excellent dinner as usual, so I was all set by air time. I was a bit worried that it would be a total bomb, but it actually turned out to be quite good, and very typical Joey. I'm sure that I'll be watching in the weeks to come. I really hope that it does well, but we'll see if the next episodes hold up.

So far, I really haven't firmed up any plans for the coming weekend. I'll probably attack another room of the house. I'm also hoping to get together with my friend, Melissa, for lunch sometime this weekend. It's been a while since I've seen her, and it will be nice to catch up on things. Hey Mel, "HELLO!". Casey and I are considering attending the Austraila festival at Centennial Park in Nashville. They are going to have all things Australian from animals and food to games. It runs through Sunday. We thought it might be kind of fun to give it a try. We'll see...everyone have a great Friday!

Humane Pawprint

I learned about this project from my Humane Society of the United States newsletter yesterday. It is called the Humane Living Pawprint quiz. It asks various questions to determine how you can be more animal friendly and reduce animal cruelty. It's a pretty neat little quiz. I scored as a silver medalist. I also learned a lot of neat ideas and ways to be even more humane. So, go ahead, take the quiz. Click on the picture below to begin.

Frantic Morning

I just hate it when I oversleep. It makes my day hectic. I feel that I'm trying to catch up for the rest of the day. You guessed it! That's EXACTLY what I did this morning. I was just laying there, drifting in and out of the alarm. I kept thinking, "Oh, I'll get up in just a couple of minutes....". Well here I am, nearly running an hour behind. It's stacking up to be a pretty crazy day for me. I've got a new student to train right off this morning. I've got forms to update, schedules to create, general craziness to attend to today. Other than just work, the day will hopefully be smooth and uneventful. While checking my inbox, I found that I have several new dogs to place on the Petfinder website for the shelter.

Casey and I didn't do much of anything after work yesterday. We did manage to get a few errands run. We went out for a fabulous Mexican dinner last night. I had the grilled chicken quesadillas and Casey had the empanadas. Both were quite yummy. Even though we had a lot of rain yesterday, it had cleared up enough that Bear was able to get his nightly walk done. So, all was happy in the Richardson household. Other than that, I guess we've been pretty boring people lately. Who knows what we will get into this afternoon......

Sorry about the delay of post. Blogger seems to be having issues today. I've been trying to get this published since about 8 this morning.

After the Hiatus...

Here I am back from my Labor Day hiatus. It was pretty nice all around. We ended up doing completely different things than we had planned. About the only thing that stayed the same was the trip to The Farmer's Market. We tooled through the inside shops and the outside goods as well. We ended up getting a yummy basket of peaches, new potatoes, sweet potatoes, and zuchhini. It all ended up being pretty cheap too! The peaches and new potatoes are absolutely fabulous! We did manage to drop by and see the greyhouds again on Saturday, courtesy of Greyhound Pets of America-Nashville. Still all VERY sweet, and I still want one. Casey made a bunch of new pics. He's a much better photographer than I am. Hopefully, I'll get a few posted soon. I did managed to get the living room cleaned up and the carpets all shampooed yesterday. I'm having luck with my "room by room" plan. Next week: bathroom from top to bottom. No real plans today. I was so wound from all of the cleaning that I didn't manage to get much sleep last night, so I think a nap is in order this afternoon. Past that, I have no idea. Tah for now!

In the Path of Frances

I've been keeping up with the latest updates on hurricane Frances on The Weather Channel. They are predicting it to make landfall either sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Again, all my thoughts and prayers go out to those Florida residents in the path of this even more powerful hurricane. May you, your family, and your furry family all stay safe. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the disaster relief workers as well, including the Red Star Disaster services from The American Humane Association, the DART team from The Humane Society of the United States , and the relief efforts from Pets and Animals in Distress. I would personally like to thank each and every one of them for assisting the animals that are lost, homeless, or hurt in disasters of this kind. A special thought for my close friend, Barbara that lives in Orlando. I am thinking good thoughts for you all........

Ode to a Husband

Yipeee! This is my last day to work this week! Because of the Labor Day holiday, we are closed on Monday, which means I get an extra day off this weekend. In addition to the extra day, I'm taking off on Friday too. Because this is also Casey's birthday weekend, he's taken off from work as well. We have lots of fun stuff planned to do this weekend in celebration. This is welcome week on campus and they have comedian, Mitch Hedberg appearing on campus tonight for free. So, we are going to drive back in, grab some dinner, and head on over to the show. Tomorrow night, we possibly have free tickets to the Tennessee Titans pre-season football game against Green Bay. On Saturday, we are going to get up early and drive into Nashville. Casey wants to have breakfast at the famous Loveless Cafe. They are famous for their southern cooking, especially their country ham and homemade biscuits. Afterwards, we are going to go the the Nashville Farmer's Market. Hopefully, we can stock up on some home grown fruits and veggies there. This should be a great time of year to go too. Then, I've talked him into going back to the 100 Oaks PetSmart to visit the greyhounds again. Sunday, we have the Shelbyville-Bedford County Humane Association car wash. I've got to get Bear all cleaned up and ready to be the donation dog for a little while. So, all in all, we have a fun and exciting weekend planned. I'm sure I'll need an extra day of rest to get all of this done. Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

I'd like to take a minute to leave a personal message to my husband:

Casey: I hope that you have the most wonderful birthday this year, for you are certainly the most wonderful husband in the whole world! How can I express in just ordinary words how much you mean to me. You've been there with me, holding my hand and my heart, through the good and bad for the past 14 years. We've grown up together, we've grown closer and our bond has only grown stronger. I can't imagine living life without you. Happy birthday! I love you!!!

A Giggle

I got this in my inbox today from our adoption coordinator. It was just too funny. I had to share:
You Know You've Been Doing Rescue Too Long When...

You have a mental list of people you'd like to spay or neuter.

You stopped at a house with a "Free Puppies" sign in the yard to have an Educational "Chat," and your kids had to post your bail.

Beginning of a New Month

I swear, where does the time go? This summer seemed like it practically flew by! Before you know it, it will be time for Christmas......2005!! Not much to report about yesterday. Casey and I did watch Father of the Pride on NBC last night. I admit, when I first heard about it, I thought it would be a complete bomb. I was pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be quite good. I think we'll probably end up watching it every week. Casey told me the best story about 2 Nashville firefighters rescuing 2 dogs from a fire. Here's the short story from our local news.

August 30, 2004 Firefighters in East Nashville are being called heroes after saving the lives of two pets. The fire broke out Sunday at a residence on Corder Drive.

The people who live there weren't home at the time, but their dogs were. One dog was all right, but the other had to be resuscitated.

Firefighters performed CPR on the dog for 15 minutes and the dog survived. Officials say the fire began in a back room of the home.

I just love to hear success stories like that! And now I post for you the very first public appearance of the many times before-mentioned kittens. I took this picture while I was cleaning on Sunday. Seems they really liked my bucket. The little head popping out on the left-hand side is actually the mother. The other 2 are the brother and one sister. Everyone enjoy their day!
